Djokovic Eyes Redemption Against Tabilo in Monte Carlo Masters

Monte Carlo, Monaco — Novak Djokovic is set for a high-stakes rematch as he faces Alejandro Tabilo in his opening match at the Monte Carlo Masters, looking to bounce back from one of the more unexpected defeats of his illustrious career.

Tabilo, ranked No. 32 in the world, earned his place in the second round after a gritty 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 comeback win over 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka on Monday. The victory sets up a compelling matchup with Djokovic, whom he upset last year in a stunning performance at the Italian Open. The Serbian legend, who received a first-round bye, managed to win only five games in that previous encounter.

This will be Djokovic’s first match since falling to Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final, and fans are eager to see how he responds on clay.

Later on Monday, fellow top contender Daniil Medvedev picked up a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory against compatriot Karen Khachanov in an all-Russian showdown. Both players had multiple break point chances, but it was Medvedev who capitalized more often, converting nine of 20 opportunities, while Khachanov managed eight of 16.

Medvedev looked poised to close the match early, leading by a set and 4-1 in the second, before Khachanov surged with five straight games to force a decider. However, crucial service breaks in the third set helped Medvedev edge out the win, despite battling cramps and visibly struggling physically by the end. The match lasted nearly three hours, and Medvedev now moves on to face Alexandre Muller, who defeated Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4, 6-4.

In other Monday action, No. 11 seed Ben Shelton was eliminated by Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1. While Davidovich Fokina hasn't claimed a title since 2022, he’s been in strong form this season with runner-up finishes in Delray Beach and Acapulco.

Italy’s Matteo Berrettini also advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mariano Navone and will now face tournament top seed Alexander Zverev. Berrettini won their last encounter on grass at Wimbledon in 2023.

Meanwhile, Lorenzo Musetti, seeded No. 13, came from behind to defeat China’s Yunchaokete Bu 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and will meet Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the next round. Lehecka advanced after a 6-3, 7-6(7) win over Sebastian Korda.

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No. 16 seed, was ousted by German qualifier Daniel Altmaier, who secured a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory. Elsewhere, American Marcos Giron knocked out Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6(5).

The Monte Carlo Masters marks the first major tournament of the clay-court season, setting the stage for high drama on the road to Roland Garros.
